Doortjie is an exciting new children’s theatre production written by Ilne Fourie. The production brings to life the oerteltjies, forest-dwelling creatures named Doortjie, Driekie and Doppies who live in a forest between somewhere and nowhere. Spinnelina and her two sidekicks Afval and Stinktoon find great pleasure in causing chaos in the lives of the oertels. Luckily Koning Woeste Baard is there to maintain law and order in
the story. Add the teasing twins to the mix and Doortjie promises to be a fun children’s adventure with live music and original songs. Bring the whole family to discover the adventures of Doortjie and the other oertels.

The action takes place in the city of Athens, which is completely devoid of men. Every man, and every almost-man, has been called to war, and whilst they are being killed off in the fighting, their wives are left at home to raise babies and amuse themselves. Lusistrata has called together the women of Athens and Sparta to come up with a way to force their husbands to come to a peace agreement.

The Ultimate Jazz concert with top musicians. See if you can keep your feet from keeping the beat! Harry Talas is a bassist and vocalist from Johannesburg will perform with saxophonist Karendra Devroop. Noel Stockton is to kick off the weekend’s festivities. The group will perform Jazz standards such as Misty, Mack the Knife, Cherokee as well as music from Bill Evans, Thelonius Monk and Noel Stockton. The UFS Big Band under the leadership of Paul Loeb van Zuilenburg will provide Entertainment with a capital E.

Bloem Show is one of the largest shows in the country that still successfully combines Agricultural and Commercial activities. About 90 000 people passed through the Bloem Show gates over the 10 days in 2009. Considering the challenging economic situation worldwide and the fact the 2009 Bloem Show only had 1 holiday in comparison to the 2 of 2008, Bloem Show was extremely blessed. Bloem Show will take place from 22 April – 1 May 2010. We want to recruit exhibitors of quality and are planning tons of entertainment by top South African and local entertainers, exciting Agricultural Championships, the largest Open Air Saddle Horse Championship in the world and an adrenalin filled experience in the Entertainment Park. The Volksblad kunstefees starting 8 July will be bigger than ever this year. Featuring 25 brand new productions, and many more from other festivals.
The key show this year is Andre Brink’s “‘n Lang dagreis na die nag“. A translation by him of an Eugene O’Neill play A Long Day’s Journey Into Night. O’Neill is a Nobel-prize winning American playwright and this play which won the Pulitzer prize is considered to be his master work.
It stars Marius Weyers and the Kanna winners Antoinette Kellerman and Stian Bam. The director is the flamboyant Marthinus Basson.
The other major attraction will be singer song writer David Kramer who will perform songs from his new Album Hemel en Aarde.
New at this year’s festival are:
- Seven plays,
- Two dance shows,
- Four music theatre productions,
- Five classical music concerts,
- Five contemporary music performances,
- as well as an Afrikaans film, the Kanna winner Meisie.

Much are currently being made in the European and US press of the events of 1968. Now exactly 40 years ago it was the cultural and political revolution that brought the Westerners personal freedom and music.
South Africa had a similar event, but it was called Voelvry and only transpired in 1989. Voelvry was a social and political movement centered around Afrikaans protest music against the strictures of the then apartheid government.
One of the icons of this generation was Valiant Swart, and one of the songs that typified it, was ‘Die Mystic Boer’ by Swart.
The song is about a mysterious Boer roaming and dancing the South African plains.

On your way to Cape Town via the N1? Very few travelers realise that one of the Free State’s most beautiful and interesting areas start just south of Bloemfontein.
About 30 minutes from Bloemfontein on the N1 take the Reddersburg turn off. Drive through the decaying glory of the picturesque Edenburg on the way to Trompsburg.

It’s only a 30 minutes drive from Edenburg to Trompsburg, but the veld will already seem more Karoo like: sparser, more hilly and browner. Trompsburg you will find is a thriving little town and has one of the best schools in the province.

It is also home to one of the best know writers in Afrikaans, Karel Schoeman. Other Afrikaans artists like singer, poet and academic Andries Bezuidenhout also spends his free time here.

From Trompsburg it’s a short and even more gorgeous drive to Philippolis, the oldest town in the Free State, and arguably the most attractive. It has become a thriving cultural center, with art galleries and its famous Witblits festivals (a South African moonshine).

Not far from Philippolis you’ll find Koffiefontein. It is here on the huge farm Ja Nee (yes no) that Steven Le Roux wrote several acclaimed avant guard books under the name Etienne Le Roux, while reading gnosticism and experimenting with alchemy. One of his books were duly banned.
